CLOSING DATE FOR ENTRIES
Please note that entry for the 2018 competition is now closed (the closing date was Saturday 3rd November.)
As of 31st October we have had 1050 models registered into the competition. This means that with still three days to go the competition exceeded last year.
Advanced, online ticket sales for Scale ModelWorld 2018 are now closed, to allow for processing and postal times.
Tickets will be available on the door, see https://ipmsuk.org/ipms-scale-modelworld/ for information and pricing.
The main display for Scale ModelWorld 2018 is the 100th anniversary of the Royal Air Force in Hall 3. Many branches and SIGs are also expected to commemorate the founding of the RAF.
Also look out for North Somerset’s WW1 trench, Bomber Command SIG’s Victoria Cross Winners display, Tangemere’s 100 Years of Tangmere Airfield, the large Mulberry harbour display in Hall 1, and Farnborough’s tribute to the late Dick Ward and his Modeldecal range.
In the foyer the WW1 SIG will be marking the end of the Great War, along with IPMS(UK)’s nominated charity, the Royal British Legion.
The Clear Prop Award
This is a new award for Scale ModelWorld 2018, sponsored by a new manufacturer called Clear Prop.
They will be awarding a trophy for the best model of a pioneering jet in 72nd Scale.
Please note the deadline for membership applications and renewals before Scale ModelWorld 2018 was midnight on 31st October 2018.
Applications or renewals received from now on will not be processed until after the show.
Accordingly, there will be no membership desk at Telford on the Friday (Scale ModelWorld set-up day, Friday 9th November).
A new trophy will be awarded for the first time at Scale ModelWorld 2018 competition.
It is called The Harry Frazer Mitchell Memorial Award & Handley Page Association Trophy, and will be given for the best model of a Handley Page designed aircraft in any scale, or a BAE Systems Hawk in any scale.
The new trophy replaces the original Handley Page Trophy. This covered any aircraft from the Handley Page company. The sponsor then was Harry Frazer Mitchell, one-time Chief Aerodynamicist of Handley Page.
Harry had always been a champion of the Society, and although it was not known outside his friends and colleagues Harry was heavily involved in the design of the BAE Hawk training aircraft.
When Harry passed away the trophy was renamed in his honour, with the permission of his family and the Handley Page Association.
For more on Harry’s life and distinguished career, see https://www.aerosociety.com/news/obituary-harry-fraser-mitchell/
The briefing document for Branch Secretaries and SIG Leaders, with important information for IPMS members is here.
There will be an Armistice display in the foyer at Scale ModelWorld to commemorate the service of British and Commonwealth personnel during the Great War.
The display will consist of models from the branches and SIGs that responded to the request in the magazine to contribute to this display.
However, we will be leaving some of the display space open so that IPMS members can add their models to the display at Scale ModelWorld without any prior booking.
If you want to add something to the Armistice display at Scale ModelWorld, please adhere to the following guidelines:
- One model per IPMS member
- The model can be any WWI subject provided it features British and/or Commonwealth personnel, planes, tanks, artillery or ships (or anything else!)
- Please don’t make it too big as space is limited. A4 or smaller is ideal
- The model can be displayed for either Saturday or Sunday, or both
- Please book your model in with someone manning the stand, don’t just place it on the table. The ideal time would be in the 9AM to 10AM IPMS-only periods on Saturday and Sunday morning
- Please don’t be offended if there is no space available. Space is limited and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis

IPMS(UK) is pleased to confirm that Wingnut Wings will be attending Scale ModelWorld 2018 with a major trade presence. Not only will this be a first for the United Kingdom, but it also makes them the farthest-travelled trader ever to attend our event.
Wingnut Wings have developed an enviable reputation in a just a few short years for their range of 1/32 scale First World War aircraft models and have set the benchmark for quality in this area.
Owned by film director Peter Jackson (best known for his Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogies), Wingnut Wings is developing an ever-expanding range of models and accessories to compliment them. Their popularity has spread rapidly across the world and it is a huge honour for IPMS (UK) to welcome them to the UK
Wingnut Wings’ decision to attend Scale ModelWorld 2018 is particularly apposite as this year marks both the Centenary of the end of the First World War and of the formation of the Royal Air Force in 1918. Their product range contains many of the iconic aircraft designs from both sides of the conflict, giving modellers the chance to own and build a miniature replica of their favourite aircraft from the era.
The admission prices for Scale ModelWorld 2018 have been held at the same level as in 2017. Click here for details

**NEW FOR SCALE MODELWORLD 2017**
The IPMS (UK) Seam Tool
You may have seen this sort of tool before but these have been designed and manufactured in the UK to our own specification.
We have had a limited number of these tools manufactured (just 200) and we will be selling them on a first come, first served basis at Scale ModelWorld in November.
The 0.25mm stainless steel tool is roughly the size of a credit card. The metal is robust enough and the edge sharp enough to gently scrape away the offending seam whilst minimising the risk of damage to the curve or angle kit parts.
The tool has a flat metal profile and each edge is profiled, incorporating a series of different radius curves along with several commonly used angles. Using the appropriate curve or angle, you can smooth off seam lines and joint lines on plastic models without damaging the existing curvature of the parts. It can also be used to reinstate the curve or angle of a part if it has been damaged or if you have filled a join or an imperfection in the part.
- Want to remove seams off gun barrels? – some of the smaller radius profiles will be ideal.
- Need to smooth the joint lines on a fuselage? – the larger profiles will do the job for you.
- Have a right-angle that needs to be reinstated? – this tool has the angles that you’ll need.
The tool is priced at £5.00 but we will be offering a ‘show special’ price of £4.00 to IPMS members (on production of a valid IPMS Membership Card). Sales will be initially limited to one tool per purchaser until we have gauged their popularity. If there is sufficient demand then we will consider a second production run.
In addition to the Seam Tool, there will be a full range of IPMS(UK) souvenir merchandise on sale in the foyer at Scale ModelWorld 2017. This includes t-shirts, polo shirts, badges, patches, stickers, mugs, lanyards and magazine back issues.
The floor plans and the locations of Branches, SIGs and Traders for Scale ModelWorld 2017 are now available
Kinetic will be launching their Harrier T2 / T4 / T8 kit in 1/48th scale at Scale ModelWorld 2017. This is the first ever full kit of a first generation Harrier two-seater made by any mainstream kit manufacturer.
The kit includes all nose, fin and tail-sting options to build any RAF/RN twin stick, plus decals for Harrier TAV-8As and TAV-8Ss in service with the USMC, Spanish Navy and Thai Navy (although these will need Stencel III-S seats fitting which are not in the kit, but resin examples can be purchased from e.g. Wingman Models as WMF48002).
The Scale ModelWorld 2017 timetable is available as a PDF here. Please note the timings are almost bound to change.
Revell will officially be launching a new-tool 1:32nd scale P-51D-5NA Mustang (early version) at Scale ModelWorld 2017.
In addition to the normal built-up sample on display, there will also have kit sprues for visitors to view and handle.
Revell are also expecting to have a further built-up sample of the kit from the guys at Scale Aviation Modeller magazine, just ahead of a full build review in their December issue.

Because I seem to be getting a lot of emails from people worried about the risk assessments I have decided to issue a generic form which can be edited to suit.
As it stands it covers all the basics and just needs a Branch or SIG name adding along with a date.
If your Branch or SIG has any extra risks that you feel should be mentioned then they can be added at the end of the form.
Please note it is a Branch or SIG responsibility to perform a proper risk assessment; simply “tick boxing” the template form is not sufficient.
This year’s new additions to the Scale ModelWorld competition trophy list include some interesting items, and one which is for this year only.
First, we have the special trophy that will only be awarded this year:
ROBERT S. HOPKINS III AWARD
Awarded for the best model of any variant of a Boeing KC-135
This is to coincide with author Robert S Watkins III’s launch of his new book on the KC 135. He will be at ScaleModel World this year signing copies as well as sponsoring the new award.
Other new trophies for this year are:
REME MUSEUM TROPHY
Awarded to the best Military Recovery Repair or Engineering Vehicle or diorama
This is an award from the REME museum and hopefully will be an annual award. I believe this trophy will be worth winning this year and in future years. It is also good to see an AFV trophy.
INSIDE THE ARMOUR PUBLICATIONS AWARD
Awarded for the best Armoured model in any scale
Inside the Armour have again made great efforts to support the competition with this award, and they have decided to make their award this year to cover a broader base within the Armour categories.
SHIP MODELLER MAGAZINE AWARD
Awarded to the best Ship Model in any scale
It is great to see an award for ship building competitors back this year, and is to support the newly-realised ship modelling magazine from Inside the Armour Publications.

This year’s Scale ModelWorld is now open to the public!
Sorry, advance tickets for Scale ModelWorld 2016 are no longer available; it’s now too close to the event to allow for delivery in time.
With less than a week to go Scale ModelWorld has already attracted more than 1000 competition entries from across the world. Registrations closed on Saturday, 5th November on what has proved to be one of the largest competition registrations since our 2013 50th Anniversary event.
Final preparations are being made for the show and the real work will start on Friday, 11th November as we set up the exhibition halls and prepare for the thousands of visitors who arrive each year. With nearly 200 traders booked in there is almost nothing related to model-making that you won’t be able to buy.
200 Branch and Special Interest Group displays stretching across three large exhibition halls will add another 4000 models to the display total, meaning that visitors can marvel at more than 5000 completed examples of the scale modelling hobby at its finest.
Scale ModelWorld is once again living up to its reputation as the largest plastic modelling show in the world. Visitors and traders will be arriving from as far afield as Japan, South Korea and Australia, not to mention Canada and the United States, assorted South American countries and of course virtually every nation in Europe. The only continent not represented is Antarctica.
The final floorplans and lists of exhibitors for Scale ModelWorld 2016 have been posted.
Please note little has changed since the previous versions; see the “Corrections and Updates” section at the foot of the Floor Plans page here

We have received notice that due to unforseen circumstances IPMS Newton Aycliffe will be unable to attend Scale ModelWorld 2016
No further applications to join IPMS or to renew membership can be made until after Scale ModelWorld
- This is to allow for processing and sending out of membership cards already in hand.
- The membership admin site will re-open for new memberships and renewals after 14th November 2016
This is traditionally our busiest time for renewals and new memberships but this year we have had an unprecedented volume of people asking to join or renew in the past couple of months and this has placed significant strain on an already busy membership administration system.
We are trying to process them as quickly as we can but it is taking time and may result in some members not receiving their membership cards in time for Scale ModelWorld.
We hope it won’t be necessary, but if we are unable to send out the cards in time to reach some members, there will be a collection point in the main foyer at Telford from 08:15 on Saturday, 12th November 2016.
Part of the problem this year has been the number of ‘late’ renewals adding pressure to an already busy time of year. We would strongly encourage everyone to renew on time in 2017 so we can avoid similar problems occurring next year.
Please also note that we are unable to complete any new Direct Debit mandates prior to Scale ModelWorld as it takes time for them to go through the banking system and they won’t be ‘live’ before the show.
We’d like to apologise for any inconvenience this situation may cause. The volume of interest in the Society, whilst gratifying, is pushing the limits of our current resources. The membership administration is carried out by volunteers in their spare time and as such, there is a limit to what we can
achieve in the time available.
IPMS (UK) Membership Secretary
