IMPORTANT! Joining IPMS or renewing membership

No further applications to join IPMS or to renew membership can be made until after Scale ModelWorld

  • This is to allow for processing and sending out of membership cards already in hand.
  • The membership admin site will re-open for new memberships and renewals after 14th November 2016

Important Membership Information – 23rd October 2016

This is traditionally our busiest time for renewals and new memberships but this year we have had an unprecedented volume of people asking to join or renew in the past couple of months and this has placed significant strain on an already busy membership administration system.

We are trying to process them as quickly as we can but it is taking time and may result in some members not receiving their membership cards in time for Scale ModelWorld.

We hope it won’t be necessary, but if we are unable to send out the cards in time to reach some members, there will be a collection point in the main foyer at Telford from 08:15 on Saturday, 12th November 2016.

Part of the problem this year has been the number of ‘late’ renewals adding pressure to an already busy time of year. We would strongly encourage everyone to renew on time in 2017 so we can avoid similar problems occurring next year.

Please also note that we are unable to complete any new Direct Debit mandates prior to Scale ModelWorld as it takes time for them to go through the banking system and they won’t be ‘live’ before the show.

We’d like to apologise for any inconvenience this situation may cause. The volume of interest in the Society, whilst gratifying, is pushing the limits of our current resources. The membership administration is carried out by volunteers in their spare time and as such, there is a limit to what we can
achieve in the time available.

Abbey Brewin
IPMS (UK) Membership Secretary

There is a cutoff of 26th October 2016 to allow for processing and sending out of membership cards prior to Scale ModelWorld
  • New members
    • If you want to join IPMS(UK) before Scale ModelWorld then you must make your application by 26th October 2016.  You can renew online or by cheque through the post, see here
  • Existing members on Direct Debit
    • If your renewal date is prior to 14th November 2016, and you have a DD confirmed to be drawn by the end of September, your renewal will go through automatically and your new membership card will be sent out in time for Scale ModelWorld.
  • Existing members NOT on Direct Debit
    • If your renewal date is prior to 14th November 2016, you must get your renewal in by 26th October 2016.  You can renew online or by cheque through the post, see here

SMW Kit Swap Arrangements

Alfie Bass writes:
Just a heads up to let everyone know that the Kit Swap instructions and sales sheets are now on the SMW kitswap page. There are the 2 versions of the sales sheet – a form that will only allow you to type into the grey boxes and a PDF document just in case. If you use the form and the grey lines at the bottom of each sheet start to creep upwards, please use the PDF version as the accountants/Treasurer need me to show the sales for each sheet (apparently makes things easier to ratify).

It would also make it easier for us to book your kits in if you’re able to keep your kits in some sort of numerical order.

I have also arranged for a temporary booking in table for the Saturday morning. This will be sited immediately inside the main entrance to the Centre. Just look for the sign and a minion in yellow.

Regards, Alfie

New Trophies at Scale ModelWorld 2015

Scale ModelWorld 2015 is still some months away but we are pleased to announce some new Trophies for the Competition.

Westland Aircraft 100th Anniversary Trophy
To celebrate the 100th anniversary of Westland’s at Yeovil in 2015, the manufacturers are kindly offering a trophy for this year. The winning models (First, Second and Third places) will be displayed at their headquarters in Yeovil for the anniversary year. As part of the arrangement, Westlands are prepared to offer assistance to potential model builders in helping to research their chosen project by providing information from their company archives (with the obvious proviso that they can’t guarantee to have that something specific in those archives).

Susan and Steven Meadowcroft Memorial Trophy
The second new trophy for this year (and we hope for future years too) is for the civilian vehicle enthusiasts. The trophy will awarded to the best civilian vehicle from the 1950s. Susan and Steven passed away recently and as a fitting tribute to them, we hope that the award will inspire competitors to build civilian vehicles from this classic era of car design.

IPMS Ireland Award
Our friends from across the Irish Sea have kindly offered to sponsor a trophy for the best model of an Irish subject or with an Irish connection, any scale, any type. IPMS Ireland have specified that this Trophy can only be entered by modellers who are not themselves Irish the award will be given to a non Irish competitor. The entry card will need to specify the connection to Ireland in order to assist the judges in their choice. This is another great IPMS trophy and one that we hope will continue for many years.

Harry Frazer Mitchell Memorial Award & Handley Page Association Trophy
We have for many years awarded a Handley Page Trophy, sponsored by the Handley Page Society. Sadly, Harry Frazer Mitchell, the long term organiser behind the trophy passed away recently and in recognition for his support over the years, we have been asked to rename the Trophy to reflect Harry’s legacy.

In a slight change to the award criteria, the Trophy will be awarded to the best model of a Handley Page designed aircraft in any scale or a BAe System Hawk in any scale.

Harry was a champion of all Hadley Page designs and worked for the company right up until they finally ceased to build aeroplanes. He went onto help design the BAe Systems Hawk. Harry was a great champion for scale models and would help and inspire any modeller who wanted to build any of these designs. A new trophy will be awarded for this year and for subsequent years.

These new trophies will be added to a wide range of existing awards that are hotly contested every year at Scale ModelWorld. The enthusiasm of individuals and groups to bring forward trophies for our annual contest is a great advert for the popularity and reputation of the event and we thank all the sponsors for their continued support.

More details of the Competition and any new Trophies will be announced over the coming months.
Happy modelling
Tony Horton
IPMS (UK) Competition Secretary

Late Arrival of IPMS Magazine

Members will have noticed that the Scale ModelWorld Special issue of the Magazine (6/2014) was very late in arriving on their doormats this time and some may still be waiting for it to arrive. I must apologise for this failure to meet our usual target of ensuring delivery before the Christmas break.

Due to a combination of circumstances beyond the control of Chris Ayre and myself, the final edit of the Magazine was late going to the printers (though the printing was actually completed before the Christmas break) and the firm that we use to handle Magazine sorting and packaging themselves had problems with the sub-contractors that they use for delivery. End result: the Magazines were not posted out until 30th December.

Don Carrick
IPMS (UK) Magazine Editor

Call for nominations and motions for the 2015 Annual General Meeting (AGM)

The deadline for nominations for members to serve as officers of the IPMS/directors on the Board of Directors of IPMS(UK) Limited, and for resolutions (often referred to as “motions”) to make amendments to the Club Rules, is 31st December 2014. (The date and venue of the AGM have yet to be determined, and details will be published in the Magazine in the early part of 2015.)

1. Elections/nominations for officers/directors
Each directorship is for a period of 2 years, commencing with the date they are elected by the membership at the AGM.

At the 2014 AGM most of the current postholders/directors were elected/re-elected. No nominations were received for the post of Membership Secretary, and Abbey Brewin is currently serving in the role on a co-opted basis. Jim Chapman was re-elected as Treasurer, but he announced at the AGM that he would be standing down with effect from 31st December 2014.

The following posts are due for election in 2015:
Honorary Treasurer
Membership Secretary
Branch and SIG Liaison Officer
Overseas Liaison Officer
Technical Advisory Service

Currently the Webmaster position is being covered by the Publicity Officer, John Tapsell.

So if you meet the IPMS (UK) criterion for standing (which is that you have or will have at least three years’ consecutive membership of IPMS(UK) as at the date of the AGM) would you consider standing please? If you decide to put your name forward for one of these roles, I will need a signed undertaking from you that you are prepared to serve in the role: it should also be signed by a proposer and a seconder, who must be current IPMS (UK) members. All three of you (the nominee, proposer and seconder) must quote their membership numbers on the nomination. The membership will then be presented with your nomination and be asked to vote on it at the AGM. Obviously, if there is more than one nomination for a post, then the person elected will be the one with the highest number of votes (be aware that the IPMS has a ‘negative voting’ system so election will be based on the net number of votes in favour).

I would like to make it clear that election to the Board as a company director brings with it certain legal responsibilities and obligations, so before accepting a nomination you need to make sure you understand them and are prepared to accept them: in particular, you will be asked to attend the regular Board meetings of IPMS(UK) Limited (known as ‘ordinary meetings’) which are generally held in the Midlands on Saturdays at intervals throughout the year. The Directors are legally required to convene a minimum of four such ordinary meetings per year, but more meetings can be called if the Board so requires.

2. Resolutions
Resolutions are also invited regarding changes to the Articles of Association of IPMS(UK) Ltd or to the Club Rules. Copies of the Articles and Rules were last issued to all members in April 2012. This means that members who have joined since then may not have copies, so I have asked John Tapsell to place a copy on the IPMS (UK) website. My apologies in advance; I am no IT expert and the quality of the documents is not as good as others may be able to produce. However, it is legible.
Resolutions proposing changes need to be clearly worded so as to make it obvious what the proposed change is, and a brief explanation should be given as to why you are proposing it and why you think a change is necessary. Be warned: if the explanation is lengthy then the Club Rules allow the Board to condense it!
Resolutions, as with nominations, need to be proposed and seconded by current IPMS (UK) members and both need to sign the resolution and give their membership number. It must all be in writing as I need to see the original signatures.
3. How and where to send nominations and resolutions
Unless they are handed to me in person, all nominations and resolutions need to be sent to me at my home address (see the back page of the Magazine) via the Royal Mail (copies sent by email are not acceptable and will be rejected). The nominations and resolutions must reach me by the 31st December 2014 (in accordance with the Club Rules): this is a strict requirement, so any received after that date will be rejected.

Thank you.
Mark Hill, Honorary Secretary

Scale ModelWorld 2014

Scale ModelWorld 2014 Coastal Salvage Vessel ‘Help’ by Barry Sharman
Scale ModelWorld is over for another year and planning has already commenced on the 2015 event (7-8 November 2015, at the Telford International Centre as usual).

The 2014 show proved to be as successful as ever, with more traders and more exhibitors than ever. Our thanks to everyone who put on displays, volunteered their services to help run the event and of course to the vast numbers of visitors who came through our doors – without all of you, we wouldn’t be able to put on such a great show.

As was to be expected, we had fewer competition entries than 2013, but the standards were as high as ever. Top honours went to Barry Sharman with his Salvage Vessel, whilst Junior Best of Show was won by Euan Angus with his Char bis tank. The competition attracted entries from 25 countries around the World.

We will be publishing a full report in the next edition of the IPMS Magazine but in the meantime we have provided a small selection of images to capture a flavour of the show.

Scale ModelWorld 2014 – the Show Manager Reports…

This is the pre-show report just less than eight weeks before Scale ModelWorld 2014. As in previous years ADH and Guideline publications continue to sponsor advertising the event and Pocketbond continue to sponsor the competition. I would like to take this opportunity to thank them publicly for their continued support at the event. Whilst we are on the subject of traders, Airfix will be announcing a large new model at 11:00 on Saturday at the SMW 2914, I am lead to believe that it will be in 1/24 scale.

When I was elected to the post of Scale ModelWorld Manager for the second time this century, part of my election manifesto was to put the IPMS(UK) Branch and SIG display space allocation at the top of my priorities for the event. With some re-planning I believe I have largely achieved this and have also managed to increase the Overseas display area into the bargain. This means we have over 180 groups displaying at SMW and over 180 traders at the event. In addition to this the Kit Swap has undergone some redesign by Alfie Bass and is bigger than ever, the show continues to grow at a pace with no signs of letting up. I already have a waiting list of traders who can’t get into this year’s SMW who require the SMW 2015 trader booking form! We have reverted to one entrance to the show for IPMS members and members of the public. This was suggested whilst I was working with the Telford International Centre (TIC) when we were planning this year’s show and should assist their and our staff in making access to SMW easier.

This year’s full size exhibit will be a Chieftain ARVE from The Cordwell Collection, one of only about 14 made. (See press release for further details). In addition to this the Daleks will be at SMW 2014 again. No doubt they will be collecting for the charities and threatening skinflints with ‘extermination’.

The chosen charities for the event are The Royal British Legion which is rather apt for the commemoration of the start of WWI. They will be situated with the special World War I display in Hall 1. The second charity is the RNLI an organisation who exist solely on public donations and a personal favourite of mine as a regular North Sea and English Channel ferry user. I would imagine a large number of our overseas visitors cross the water to attend the event and you never know when you might require their services. They will be situated in the foyer near the IPMS(UK) desk.

As I touched on earlier Hall 1 will have the Special Display which commemorates World War I, this is being organised by Steve Cox from the IPMS Brampton group and from what I’ve seen of it so far it will be pretty impressive. The Make and Paint will be in this hall not too far from the Airfix stand, who will be running the area. There will also be access to the competition and restaurant catering in Hall 4 from this hall. Whilst I am on the subject of the competition, there will be No Bags, No Drink and No Food allowed in the competition area from 2014. If you have a bag and are not part of a display at the event there is a cloakroom available in the foyer run by Telford Centre staff. Catering has also been expanded in Hall 3 and there will be a bar area situated in that hall.

The IPMS(UK) Membership and Help Desk will be in the foyer near to the public cash desks. You will be able to renew your IPMS(UK) membership buy IPMS(UK) merchandise and show souvenirs. We will be observing the two minutes silence at 11:00 on Sunday morning. We are hoping to have Sqn Ldr Dyson playing ‘The Last Post’ and the IPMS Chaplain Rev John McIllmurray conducting a short service on the gantry as usual.

We will be continuing with wristband entry from IPMS members and traders. IPMS(UK) members will obtain their wristbands from the IPMS(UK) desk in the foyer.

Without mentioning names as there are too many, I would like to thank all the people who have helped me in putting this year’s show together, no matter how small their involvement. Without them there would be no SMW. Enjoy the show and no doubt I will be blown away by the quality of work on display as always and I look forward to meeting old and new friends over the weekend.

Chieftain Tank on display at Scale ModelWorld 2014

Chieftain Tank on display at Scale ModelWorld

IPMS (UK) is pleased to confirm that 2014 will see an ex-British Army Chieftain Tank on display at Scale ModelWorld – and not a standard Chieftain either.

The tank in question is a very rare Chieftain AVRE (Willich) owned by Peter Cordwell of the Cordwell Collection. Towards the end of the cold war it was decided to replace the Centurion AVRE (Armoured Vehicle Royal Engineers) With a Chieftain based vehicle that could keep up with Chieftain and Challenger 1 tanks on the battlefield. As ever the MOD wanted the vehicle as cheaply as possible and the project was given to the Royal Engineers based in Willich West Germany. 12 vehicles were produced from Chieftain MBT’s. The vehicle attending Scale ModelWorld is believed to have served in the first Gulf war.

New Trophies for Scale ModelWorld 2014

IPMS (UK) has the great pleasure in announcing not one but two new armour trophies will be on offer at Scale ModelWorld in 2014.

Sponsored by Inside the Armour, the well-known producer and distributor of aftermarket products in the UK, this is great news for military vehicle modellers as it broadens the opportunity to compete for this category of models at Scale ModelWorld.

Chris Meddings, owner of Inside The Armour, has long been a successful competitor at Scale ModelWorld and after a number of discussions with Tony Horton, IPMS (UK) Competition Secretary, has offered to support and promote the Category in a more concrete form. There are only a couple of existing trophies for this category, so Chris’ generous offer is doubly welcome, especially as AFV modelling has become more and more popular in recent years.

Chris assures us that the winner of either of these trophies will get a significant award. IPMS (UK) would like to encourage any armour-building member of IPMS (UK), or indeed any IPMS member from around the World to compete for the trophies and make them the successful awards that they deserve to be. Good luck to all who enter.

The new Trophies are:
Awarded for best model using an Inside the Armour Products of any kind.
Military Vehicles, any scale, any IPMS category; modellers must show at least one
picture of the unpainted model, and identify the Inside the Armour Products on their Competition card.

Awarded for the Best Military vehicle, scratch build or homemade conversion;
The best use of scratch building techniques (not commercially available parts) in a military vehicle subject. Any scale.

Scale ModelWorld 2014 Update

2014 Show News
After the success of the 50th anniversary Scale ModelWorld show for IPMS (UK) thoughts quickly turned to the 2014 show. It had been muted that there may be a slowdown in participation of the event after the obvious high of celebrating the societies’ 50th year. The evidence so far is quite the contrary. We have more traders then ever wanting to attend the event and currently have a waiting list of standby vendors wanting space at short notice if anyone drops out for any reason and as in previous years the traders attending the show are visiting Telford from all over the globe. We have more Branches and SIG’s than ever wishing to attend the event, plus more and more overseas IPMS clubs and countries also want to participate. As we only have a finite amount of space the intention is to concentrate on the model displays. This does not mean that the exhibits will be disappearing altogether but we will be trying to tailor them to specific events such as historic significance or new model releases. With that in mind the displays we are looking to attend the show this year are connected to the 100th anniversary of the start of WWI and possibly a new model release to be announced at SMW 2014.

IPMS (UK) AGM 2014

The 2014 AGM will be held on Saturday 10th May 2014 at the South Yorkshire Aircraft Museum, (Doncaster Aeroventure) Dakota Way, Airbourne Road, Doncaster, South Yorkshire, DN4 7FB. Please note, SatNav users should use DN4 7NW.

The AGM is open to all current members of the Society and admission to the museum itself is free on presentation of a current valid membership card. Please note: those who wish to make a postal vote must return their voting forms to the Honorable Secretary to arrive no later than Friday 9th May.

Langham Dome Model Contest

We have been sent a press release relating to an interesting project being run by the Friends of Langham Dome (see the web link below).

The Friends of Langham Dome are calling for entries to its aircraft model-making competition. Winners’ aircraft will take pride of place in the Dome’s stunning new exhibition space, opening later this year.

The Langham Dome project is steaming ahead. But we need some further help! And it’s not money. It’s skill. We need static 1/48 scale model aircraft of some of the types that flew from Langham to be part of our exhibition.

The first model we need is the Beaufighter – the doughty two-engined aircraft manufactured by Bristol that played a hugely successful role in anti-shipping operations. Also needed is the Barnes Wallis designed Wellington. And for those fascinated by slightly later technology, we’re also after the early jet-engined Vampire, manufactured by de Havilland.

Models of these aircraft will help visitors to the Dome appreciate the significant part they and their crews played during and after World War II.
Full details about the competition, including rules and specifications are available by emailing Kate Faire or phoning 07789 636106. The competition deadline is 30th May 2014.

Winners in each category will have their credited model aircraft on permanent display in the Langham Dome.
