Scale ModelWorld 2014 – the Show Manager Reports…

This is the pre-show report just less than eight weeks before Scale ModelWorld 2014. As in previous years ADH and Guideline publications continue to sponsor advertising the event and Pocketbond continue to sponsor the competition. I would like to take this opportunity to thank them publicly for their continued support at the event. Whilst we are on the subject of traders, Airfix will be announcing a large new model at 11:00 on Saturday at the SMW 2914, I am lead to believe that it will be in 1/24 scale.

When I was elected to the post of Scale ModelWorld Manager for the second time this century, part of my election manifesto was to put the IPMS(UK) Branch and SIG display space allocation at the top of my priorities for the event. With some re-planning I believe I have largely achieved this and have also managed to increase the Overseas display area into the bargain. This means we have over 180 groups displaying at SMW and over 180 traders at the event. In addition to this the Kit Swap has undergone some redesign by Alfie Bass and is bigger than ever, the show continues to grow at a pace with no signs of letting up. I already have a waiting list of traders who can’t get into this year’s SMW who require the SMW 2015 trader booking form! We have reverted to one entrance to the show for IPMS members and members of the public. This was suggested whilst I was working with the Telford International Centre (TIC) when we were planning this year’s show and should assist their and our staff in making access to SMW easier.

This year’s full size exhibit will be a Chieftain ARVE from The Cordwell Collection, one of only about 14 made. (See press release for further details). In addition to this the Daleks will be at SMW 2014 again. No doubt they will be collecting for the charities and threatening skinflints with ‘extermination’.

The chosen charities for the event are The Royal British Legion which is rather apt for the commemoration of the start of WWI. They will be situated with the special World War I display in Hall 1. The second charity is the RNLI an organisation who exist solely on public donations and a personal favourite of mine as a regular North Sea and English Channel ferry user. I would imagine a large number of our overseas visitors cross the water to attend the event and you never know when you might require their services. They will be situated in the foyer near the IPMS(UK) desk.

As I touched on earlier Hall 1 will have the Special Display which commemorates World War I, this is being organised by Steve Cox from the IPMS Brampton group and from what I’ve seen of it so far it will be pretty impressive. The Make and Paint will be in this hall not too far from the Airfix stand, who will be running the area. There will also be access to the competition and restaurant catering in Hall 4 from this hall. Whilst I am on the subject of the competition, there will be No Bags, No Drink and No Food allowed in the competition area from 2014. If you have a bag and are not part of a display at the event there is a cloakroom available in the foyer run by Telford Centre staff. Catering has also been expanded in Hall 3 and there will be a bar area situated in that hall.

The IPMS(UK) Membership and Help Desk will be in the foyer near to the public cash desks. You will be able to renew your IPMS(UK) membership buy IPMS(UK) merchandise and show souvenirs. We will be observing the two minutes silence at 11:00 on Sunday morning. We are hoping to have Sqn Ldr Dyson playing ‘The Last Post’ and the IPMS Chaplain Rev John McIllmurray conducting a short service on the gantry as usual.

We will be continuing with wristband entry from IPMS members and traders. IPMS(UK) members will obtain their wristbands from the IPMS(UK) desk in the foyer.

Without mentioning names as there are too many, I would like to thank all the people who have helped me in putting this year’s show together, no matter how small their involvement. Without them there would be no SMW. Enjoy the show and no doubt I will be blown away by the quality of work on display as always and I look forward to meeting old and new friends over the weekend.

Chieftain Tank on display at Scale ModelWorld 2014

Chieftain Tank on display at Scale ModelWorld

IPMS (UK) is pleased to confirm that 2014 will see an ex-British Army Chieftain Tank on display at Scale ModelWorld – and not a standard Chieftain either.

The tank in question is a very rare Chieftain AVRE (Willich) owned by Peter Cordwell of the Cordwell Collection. Towards the end of the cold war it was decided to replace the Centurion AVRE (Armoured Vehicle Royal Engineers) With a Chieftain based vehicle that could keep up with Chieftain and Challenger 1 tanks on the battlefield. As ever the MOD wanted the vehicle as cheaply as possible and the project was given to the Royal Engineers based in Willich West Germany. 12 vehicles were produced from Chieftain MBT’s. The vehicle attending Scale ModelWorld is believed to have served in the first Gulf war.

Pictured is Richard Farrar, Scale ModelWorld Show Manager (left), shaking hands with Melvin Cordwell to seal the deal.

New Trophies for Scale ModelWorld 2014

IPMS (UK) has the great pleasure in announcing not one but two new armour trophies will be on offer at Scale ModelWorld in 2014.

Sponsored by Inside the Armour, the well-known producer and distributor of aftermarket products in the UK, this is great news for military vehicle modellers as it broadens the opportunity to compete for this category of models at Scale ModelWorld.

Chris Meddings, owner of Inside The Armour, has long been a successful competitor at Scale ModelWorld and after a number of discussions with Tony Horton, IPMS (UK) Competition Secretary, has offered to support and promote the Category in a more concrete form. There are only a couple of existing trophies for this category, so Chris’ generous offer is doubly welcome, especially as AFV modelling has become more and more popular in recent years.

Chris assures us that the winner of either of these trophies will get a significant award. IPMS (UK) would like to encourage any armour-building member of IPMS (UK), or indeed any IPMS member from around the World to compete for the trophies and make them the successful awards that they deserve to be. Good luck to all who enter.

The new Trophies are:
I.1. INSIDE THE ARMOUR PRODUCTS AWARD.
Awarded for best model using an Inside the Armour Products of any kind.
Military Vehicles, any scale, any IPMS category; modellers must show at least one
picture of the unpainted model, and identify the Inside the Armour Products on their Competition card.

I.2. INSIDE THE ARMOUR BEST MILITARY SCRATCH BUILT AWARD.
Awarded for the Best Military vehicle, scratch build or homemade conversion;
The best use of scratch building techniques (not commercially available parts) in a military vehicle subject. Any scale.
